Street Vendors Successfully Push For Their Licenses in Newark

Street vendors and other small business owners who have been organizing through New Labor won an impressive victory in May, when they pressured the City of Newark to grant them vending licenses. Problems arose when the City began requiring documentation and other requisites that would be difficult for the existing vendors to fulfill.  Despite significant bureaucratic hurdles, New Labor kept the pressure on the administration of Mayor Cory Booker to make good on an earlier promise that the vendors would receive their credentials. In the end, the Mayor and others realized that the vendors make up a valued part of the life and fabric of Newark’s neighborhoods.
